Winter Olympics and dragonflies

With a title like that, this could be a very short blogpost, as it's not currently the weather for adult dragons and damsels, neither here in Orkney and certainly not in Northern Italy. However, against the odds, I shall attempt to segue some summery fluttering with a snowy scene in the mountains of Cortina. Currently, we're watching the GB curling team (ok, it's Scottish really) take on Czechia in their third game of the Mixed Doubles. I know that the Winter Olympics haven't officially opened yet, but such is the nature of a large round-robin competition, things have started early. Whilst we're more used to seeing Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat in Scotland's colours, rather than the red, white and blue of Great Britain, curling is very much a sport synonymous with the area further north than Hadrian's Wall. In times past, curling was an outdoor sport with over 2500 sites recognised in Scotland, either natural lochs or specially-constructed ponds. Nowadays, with ...

Pine studious

These opening paragraphs are going to have to ramble on for a while, as the first photograph is of a spider, and I wouldn't want to make you jump without at least giving you a bit of a warning. If it helps at all, it is a super close-up, taken with me kneeling on a boardwalk and reaching across and down to the water's surface, so that my fingers were only a few centimetres from the spider. Just ignore that tickly sensation which has suddenly begun behind one of your ears. Happily, the remaining nineteen photographs on this blogpost are a lot less scary, some are just plain cute, and the whole shebang encompasses the last four days of our Nethy Bridge holiday and a broad swathe of wildlife. But back to the first image, the beast in question is a Raft Spider, sat on...

Photographing Nethy regions

Natural Highs and Lows is on holiday. I know! All vaccined up and laterally flow tested; masked and maintaining as much social distancing as possible; excited at the thought of two weeks of wildlife watching, but nervous about being amongst other folk once more. Despite umpteen announcements over the tannoy, the ferry trip to mainland Scotland was a nightmare, stuck on a ship midst unmasked covidiots with little concept of personal space. Ugh. However, several hours later, calm was restored upon checking in to a small self catering cottage in the Nethybridge area of the Cairngorms, complete with a garden which was really just an extension of the surrounding countryside. Bliss. And breathe. Four-spotted Chaser, at a pond in Nethybridge  Cardinal Beetle, in garden of cottage Goosander on the River Nethy Northern Damselflies mating, at a pond in Nethybridge Longhorn Beetle on window of cottage Treecreeper in garden of cottage Red Squirrel in garden of cottage Long-tailed Tit fledgling...
