One evening last week, I noticed an odd-looking finch sat on the top wire of a fence. The day's light was fading fast but the bird appeared to have an orangey-red rump, and I had no idea what species it was. Hastily fetching my binoculars, but remaining indoors so as not to spook the bird, I realised that it was a Twite which had had a very close call with a predator, losing the feathers from its rump in the process. After a while, it flew off, so it mustn't have been too badly injured in the attack.
Love the Redpoll. Do you get many Cuckoos. We've just got back from Sheigra, right up on the NW - the Cuckoo was almost constant for two weeks solid. We also learned how to spot them, they are very often on fence posts, telegraph wires or on the top of dead trees. I have to say though at the end of two weeks the call was driving us...well, cuckoo
ReplyDeleteHi Mark, yes, we do have Cuckoo up here, but not in the abundance of the NW. In fact, not seen or heard one yet this year (though others have). Had my first sighting of a damselfly for 2021 yesterday, so I am a happy bunny.
